Quantum Theory

2021
The poem is about how we can continue to hope and imagine a different outcome or wish something did or did not happen, but that alternate reality where those wishes are granted only resulted in something else we then wish didn’t happen. So in the end, we should appreciate the life we have lived for both the good and bad. To set the tone of uncertainty solely through the title, I wanted to experiment with the weights so that as you start to read the title, it alternates throughout the words leaving the reader to want to learn more about this unexplained change. It leaves a message of ending up with something you did not initially expect.
As for the imagery I chose, I wanted the background to be of space because similar to how there is so much that is still unknown about space, the idea of parallel universes is also another entity that will always be unknown to us. The other three images I chose to relate to the poem as I associated it with a specific word from the block of text that was next to the image. The first image is of a snowy forest, for the line “you drink light with your hands all winter.” Then the middle image of the moon phases refers to “there is a universe in which there is no difference between the past and the ground. Another where the oceans pull the moon.” Lastly, the image of the red ocean alludes to “but know: by signing, you agree also to be responsible for the universe where the oceans glow red.” Combining the ocean with the title ties in the entirety of the poem’s message as the unpredictability of the ocean reflects the uncertainty of what the future and other realities hold.
